To keep your skin beautiful and healthy, it may be necessary for women to pay a little extra attention to skincare as you age. Not only does a good routine keep you looking stylish and youthful, but its also a great way to keep up with your health overall.
Here are six tips to help spruce up your anti-aging routine.
1- Protect Against UV Damage
Here in Scottsdale, we have no shortage of sun. While being outdoors can be fun, remember that UV rays can damage and prematurely age the skin. Sun exposure may not only put you at risk for serious skin disease; it destroys the collagen in the skin, dries out the skin, and can cause discoloration.
When preparing for time outside apply SPF 30 or higher at least three to five minutes before applying your makeup. Consider wearing a wide brimmed (and fashionable) hat to protect your face and neck as well.
2- Add Collagen
Collagen is a naturally occurring protein and the main component of connective tissue in the body. This protein helps skin remain taught and plump.
There are a number of ways to increase the collagen in the body. Since it is naturally produced, you can help your body make more collagen by eating more protein, vitamin C, zinc, and copper-rich foods.
Consider adding foods like chicken, eggs, citrus fruits, bone broth, fish, and garlic to your diet. If you want a little extra help speak to your doctor about using collagen supplements or shots.
3- Keep a Regular Skincare Routine
It may seem simple, but having a regular skin care routine is necessary for skin health. Consistent care keeps the skin vibrant, moisturized, and wrinkle free.
Your routine should include proper cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection at a minimum. If you want to enhance your skin care, you can include creams, toners, and serums to treat specific needs such as dryness or wrinkles.
Make sure your routine is not too much for you to feel comfortable repeating on a daily basis.
4- Pay Attention to Your Makeup
Makeup is a tool many women use to enhance their natural beauty, but it could be devastating to anti aging efforts. While it’s not necessary to avoid makeup altogether, pay attention to your habits around it and the products you use.
Store your makeup according to its instructions and ensure it isn’t expired before you use it. Consider using products that are hypoallergenic or have sunscreen or collagen in the formula. Deep clean each day after wearing makeup so it doesn't clog your pores and cause damaging acne.
Also, consider that makeup can cause artificial aging when it looks cakey or does not go well with your skin tone.
5- Drink Water (Lots of Water)
Hydrated skin is healthy skin.
The skin is the largest organ in the body, and just like other organs it needs to be cared for from the inside out. Water flushes toxins from the body and some claim it gives their skin a healthy glow.
Dehydration also weakens the skin’s ability to protect itself from outside forces. Aim for at least eight glasses daily.
Drink water infused with fresh fruit, cucumber, or mint to get some extra vitamins and nutrients in as well.
6- Visit Your Dermatologist
An ounce of prevention is better than two ounces of cure. This old cliche apples to healthy skin.
You may remember to go to your primary doctor, but keep your dermatologist in your rotation as well. It is recommended to go at least once a year.
It’s never a bad idea to keep an updated professional opinion on the quality of your skin and any potential roadblocks to keeping your youthful looks. Remember dermatologists can also recommend or prescribe products to help you reach your goals.
There is not a woman on earth who does not want to feel beautiful. If you take steps now to improve your skincare, you will always look young and healthy.
